How ZIP™ works

Based on the swaging of dovetail profiles in a simple zip action, ZIP™ creates a joint that combines local elastic and plastic strains, to create retained residual stresses that energize multiple seal faces. This increases the strength and reliability of the connection compared to traditional threaded, welded or other permanent connections.

The Next Evolution of

The ZIP™ connection system was spun out of Meta Downhole Limited in 2016, as the next evolution of metal-to-metal sealing technology. Based on the applied science of autofrettage, ZIP™ was borne from over 30 years of experience within Meta and READ Well Services Ltd who have had 100% successful operational installation with their products.

ZIP™ is the next stage application of metal to metal sealing technology using patented designs to provide a multi seal connection system that is technically and economically superior to existing threaded, welded and other permanent connections.
With an industry sponsored FEED study successfully completed, the ZIP™ technology is covered by a portfolio of patents and is ready for next stage development to commercialisation.

ZIP™ is a connection solution that addresses current well design constraints and enables the extension of maximum drilling depths while realising time and cost savings with a superior connection. ZIP™ not only enables Operators to get to depth but offers a larger final ID.

ZIP™ is a simple, reliable and safe alternative to current threaded tubular connections. The swaged connection is technically superior with multiple metal to metal seals which significantly reduces the risk of a leak path, increasing reliability and reducing overall HSE risk. ZIP™ provides superior torque and technical capabilities in both compression and tension to existing flush and semi-flush threaded connections, with burst and collapse equivalent to pipe body.

The innovative design enables the applied torque to be distributed throughout the contact area with over 80% of the groove faces being in interference contact driven by residual strains. This creates a very high frictional force that inhibits rotation, whilst maintaining high seal energization.

ZIP™’s enhanced strength offers greatly increased load bearing capacity which enables the extension of maximum drilling depths providing access to pools of reserves previously unobtainable due to current well design constraints. This allows for more casing schemes providing the operator with the increased ability to cement off trouble zones.

The fully automated, easy to use system enables faster connection times. There is an estimated reduction in the number of operational steps required by over 30% with an associated reduction in required man hours and no need for specialist crew.
